Meeting people, sharing, feeling useful and being helpful are what Bernie
Falkowski enjoys the most about volunteering at Maplewood Health Care Center and Maplewood
Residence in Cheektowaga.
After retiring from 26 years of teaching at Buffalo Public School No. 11
Bernie wanted to increase his activity level and usefulness. Today this 63 year-old brings
joy and comfort to the most frail and/or confused residents. His calming personality has a
positive effect on everyone.
Bernie honors any request and being over 6 feet tall with a full white
beard, has even played Santa.
He takes his responsibility towards the residents seriously and they, in turn, welcome him
with open arms. One resident even sings to Bernie in Polishmuch to his delight.
