Do You Know ALL That Erie County
Senior Services Offers ??
SOMETHING FOR ANYBODY 60+

by Pam KRAWCZYK

The ERIE COUNTY Department of Senior Services offers a wealth of information and resources; connecting older adults directly with needed services, or if not able to directly help, referral to where you can get answers to your questions. In Erie County, one out of every five residents is aged 60 or older, and individual needs range greatly: one person may be seeking a way to stay busy after retirement, another may need help with personal care such as bathing or cooking. As the Area Agency on Aging, Senior Services serves all seniors regardless of income. Our professional and caring staff truly understand the ever-changing needs of today's seniors. There is help available regarding finances, health issues, activities, and much more just a phone call away: (716) 858-8526.

The Department can help with the details involved with benefits and programs such as Food Stamps, SSl, New York's EPIC Prescription plan, HEAP, Medicaid and Medicare. Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) helps individuals understand choices and options available to them through Medicare and HMO plans. The Going Places Transportation van service helps seniors get to doctor appointments or therapy as well as grocery shopping or to volunteer. Case managers will meet in the privacy of your home to assess your needs and link you to the appropriate services.

There are more than fifty Stay Fit Nutrition Sites throughout Erie County where seniors and spouses can go for a nutritious and delicious lunch, company of friends, and opportunity to learn about nutrition, cooking or exercise if desired. For those unable to leave the house, the Department supports Meals on Wheels home-delivered meal services. Our newly created Caregiver Resource Center helps those who care for other family members, friends or grandchildren.

Senior Services funds a variety of programs especially for older adults, collaborating with service agencies throughout the area, and knows about resources available throughout the community. If you'd like a comprehensive listing of community services, call Senior Information: (716) 858-8526 and we'll be happy to send a free copy of our "Guide to Services for Older People in Erie County".

If you need information on any topic related to older adults or aging services, call the Erie County Department of Senior Services or visit our website: www.erie.gov/depts/seniorservices. From lists of senior centers, to various housing options, to how to make a home safer for an aging senior, to a speakers bureau able to address groups, we can help.
